Factlet
You may have been expecting the recently coined word
"factoid,"
instead of the more obscure "factlet." I cannot recall
the source,
but I once read an interesting article on the use of these two
words.
CNN appears to have popularized the word "factoid,"
and many others
have picked up on the practice. However, the creation of this
word is
unfortunate. Other words containing "oid" suggest that
the suffix
means resembling, but not the same as. Thus, an android is like
a
human, but not quite. A spheroid is like a sphere, but not quite
a
sphere. By parallel construction, a "factoid" should
be something
resembling a fact, but not quite a fact. If the intended use of
the
term is to mean a small fact, then "factlet" is a better
choice.
